DHL Global Forwarding required a full turnkey fitout completing at their workspace in Staines, to align better with their strong brand, as well as modernising and improving their current open-plan office and meeting rooms. This needed to enable people to do their best work together in a better connected space, help attract and retain talent, foster wellbeing and support neurodiversity. DHL commissioned Woodhouse to deliver a well-thought out workspace with an impactful brand arrival experience that answered to this brief.
Our team engaged with the project team at DHL to carry out some initial analysis of their current space. They discovered that the building had good natural light to the perimeters, as well as an open floor plate that allowed flexibility to the layout. However, there were some challenges taking this space from atypical, white box unit and transforming it into a modern space with the personality and impact that the client wanted. The very deep floor plate made the centre of the space much darker than the perimeter, so the right lighting and furniture solutions were critical to transform the centre into great places to work, despite the lower natural light.
In addition, the cellular layout and high, exposed ceilings required thoughtful acoustic considerations, as well as balancing of aesthetics with practicality and cost. It was important to consider the impact on meeting rooms particularly, to avoid frustration around noise leakage and echoes. This was resolved through choice of carpet, upholstery and acoustic baffles, as well as using solid doors as opposed to glass doors which are less sound proof.
To create a striking visual statement, real repurposed DHL sea and air freight containers were used as part of the design, which has added authenticity to the brand of the space, helping to foster a sense of belonging to the company for the teams that work there.
The space is also fully future-proofed, including new NEP and AV systems throughout, making the workspace a true destination workspace for many years to come.
